NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE

Naturopathy is a complete system of medicine which includes healing modalities such as Homeopathy, Botanical Medicine, Naturopathic Manipulative Therapy, Nutritional Therapy, Hydrotherapy and Pharmaceutical Therapy.  The rigorous 4 year medical training prepared Dr. Levy to be a Primary Care Practitioner within the state of Oregon with all the skills and credentials necessary to order and interpret laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging.  Dr. Levy bases his practice on the 6 principles of Naturopathy.

First Do No Harm:

Naturopaths strive to minimize the potentially harmful side effects of certain methods of treatment and medications.

The Healing Power of Nature: Naturopathic physicians recognize the inherent, ordered, and intelligent healing process that every individual possesses and they are committed to honoring and encouraging that quality within their patients.

Identify & Treat the Cause:

Prioritizing the identification, removal and treatment of the causes of disease instead of merely addressing or suppressing symptoms is vitally important for Naturopaths.

Treat the Whole Person:

Each patient deserves to be treated as a unique individual who is comprised of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, environmental and genetic aspects which cannot be separated from their whole self.

Doctor As Teacher:

The word doctor comes from the Latin word docere which means teacher.  Naturopaths believe that one of the primary roles of being a doctor is to teach their patients how to care for themselves healthfully.

Prevention:

Prevention really is the best medicine and this may entail evaluating risk factors, heredity, and vulnerability to disease.  In doing so Naturopaths save their patients from needless suffering and medical costs and ultimately they save lives.

CHINESE  MEDICINE

Dr. Levy received his Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine (MSOM) from the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) in 2007 and he currently remains a certified Diplomat with the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) as well as the Oregon Medical Board (OMB) as an Licensed Acupuncturist (LAc.).  Dr. Levy is trained in Classical Chinese Medicine (CCM) which means that his education in Chinese Medicine is based on reading and understanding the classic ancient Chinese medical texts such as The Shang Han Lun, The Huang di Nei Jing and The Nan-Ching.  These classical texts serve as the foundation upon which his practice is based.  The practice of Classical Chinese Medicine is passed down from generation to generation through direct mentorship and as such, Dr. Levy is a 17th generation lineage holder of this tradition through the Jin Jing Gong Shi Si Shi school which was brought over from China and which was taught at NUNM.

The practice of CCM is based on three vital aspects of treatment: Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Chinese Herbal Formulas, and Qi Gong.  Acupuncture is performed with very thin needles inserted directly into the body and it is often accompanied by moxibustion which is the application of heat through the burning of an herb.  Chinese herbal formulas are groups of herbs combined together to specifically meet each patient's individual needs.  Qi Gong translates as “energy work” and this treatment involves the use of special exercises that a patient may be taught to do so they can perform them on a regular basis at at home.  During a typical office visit with Dr. Levy, he may employ one or more of these treatment modalities.  Additionally, he may also use other treatments such as Cupping, Scraping, Rolling or Chinese Dietary Principles to help a patient recover.

PHYSICAL MEDICINE
& MASSAGE

Dr. Levy has been practicing massage for over 25 years.  He believes in the healing power of touch and when appropriate to patient care he applies massage or other physical medicine treatments.  Common modalities he employs include Swedish, Deep Tissue, Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Orthobionomy, and Polarity Therapy.  Additionally, Dr. Levy was trained in Naturopathic Manipulative Therapy, a modality that incorporates spinal and extremity manipulations or adjustments, and when necessary, these adjustments can be applied.
